The importance of a successful WordPress migration
We’ve all been there at one point or another. Whether we are upgrading to a new hosting provider or having a web design company build our site, we wind up facing a website migration where we have to move our existing website to another hosting platform. Just the thought alone can be extremely stressful, and a million things begin racing through our minds as we think of what could go wrong or what could be lost. Fret not. This is where the Migrate Guru for WordPress migration plugin comes to save the day!
There are few things that can go wrong during a migration that can cause a lot of headaches—from lost images and content, to corrupted databases. All of these can be really extremely frustrating, and the last thing you want to encounter when migrating your website.
I looked all over for a tool or a service that could move websites for my customers while I worked at IDX Broker. None of the ones I could find or use had a working integration for FlyWheel. So, I found myself either asking them to move the sites for me with a 1-3 business day delay or moving them by hand, a tactic that I don’t recommend attempting without knowing how to overcome all of the potential things that could go wrong.
I found a bunch of tools and services that could help facilitate the migrations I needed to perform: BackupBuddy, WP Migrate DB Pro (and its accompanying tool sets), WP Engine Backups, Duplicator, VaultPress, and All-in-One WP Migration—just to name a few. But none of these provided that safety net or integrated with FlyWheel; so, I found myself digging and digging to try and find an answer.
One day, while talking with a senior tech at FlyWheel, I was told about a plugin that just added integration with their service that could help me safely migrate these sites without having to worry about all of these things. Migrate Guru uses the BlogVault service to help pack up your existing site and move it to another provider. If the service runs into any problems, you are sent an email to let you know what went wrong and doesn’t modify the site you are trying to move—a no harm, no foul situation. I can live with that; so I gave it a chance, and I haven’t looked back ever since.
Why is Migrate Guru so awesome?
Migrate Guru integrates with several hosting platforms, not just FlyWheel, so it is very flexible in how it handles a website migration. As of this writing, they currently support migration for the following:
They now support migration for the majority of hosting platforms out there and makes the entire process easier and safer to do. If you aren’t on one of the major hosting platforms, but your host uses cPanel or you can access the site using FTP/SFTP, then you can use this plugin to migrate your site and use the Backup by BlogVault service to safely move your site with very little effort or stress.
Are there any limitations I should be aware of?
- If you are migrating a lot of sites (more than five per month), then you will need to reach out to the plugin developer and request to have the five site limit extended. You can move any of the five sites as many times as you want, but no more than five sites can be moved per month without requesting an extension.
- If you are needing to create a backup of the site as part of the migration process, this plugin doesn’t create a backup that you can download.
- You will need to have WordPress installed where you want to migrate your site.
If you can live with those limitations, then Migrate Guru just might be the WordPress migration solution you have been looking for. You can get this plugin from within the WordPress plugin repository here, and if you run into trouble, they have a great guide that you can refer to here.
